Walk-In Shower Conversions in Walnut Creek
A tub-to-shower conversion removes the tub, updates the plumbing, and builds a waterproofed shower with a low curb or none at all. Simple swaps take days, not weeks. Most need a permit, and in Rossmoor, mutual approval as well.

Tub out

Plumbing
The drain is moved to the shower position and the valve raised or replaced; a handheld or second head is plumbed now.

Pan & waterproofing
A sloped pan (prefab or mortar) and a continuous waterproof membrane go in, often flood-tested.
- IVChapter
Walls & glass
Tile or solid panels, a niche, then glass measured and installed after the tile.
Curb or curbless?
| Low curb | Curbless | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Step over a 2โ4 inch curb | Roll or walk straight in |
| Floor work | Usually none beyond the shower | Floor framing often recessed or the whole bathroom floor re-sloped |
| Drain | Center or linear | Usually linear, at the back or entry |
| Cost and time | Lower | Higher; more framing and waterproofing |
| Best for | Most hall and primary baths | Wheelchairs, walkers, long-term aging in place |
Safety features worth adding now
Once the walls are open, solid blocking for grab bars costs very little. Add a fold-down or built-in seat, a handheld shower on a slide bar, a slip-resistant floor tile and a pressure-balancing valve. For a full accessibility plan, see aging-in-place bathrooms.
Permits
Replacing or relocating plumbing fixtures typically means a building permit, and the new showerhead and any replaced fixtures must meet California's water-conserving standards. See permits and rules.
Rossmoor homeowners
The First Walnut Creek Mutual's policy manual lists tub-to-shower conversions as a standard alteration handled through the Mutual Operations Division, and a city permit may also be required. Policies differ by mutual, so check yours. Start with Rossmoor remodels.
What moves the price

- Curbless construction and floor re-framing
- Frameless glass vs a curtain or framed door
- Damage found behind the old tub surround

Shower conversion questions
How much does a tub-to-shower conversion cost?
It depends on the finish. A prefabricated pan with wall panels costs far less than a tiled shower with a custom glass door, and moving the valve or drain adds plumbing labor. Walnut Creek contractors price a full hall-bath remodel at roughly $25,000โ$50,000+ (Mazzamuto); a conversion that leaves the rest of the bathroom alone usually comes in below that. See the bathroom cost guide.
How long does a walk-in shower conversion take?
A straightforward swap that keeps the drain and valve in place, using a pan and panels, can take a few days. A tiled shower takes longer because waterproofing, tile and grout each need set-up time, and glass is measured after the tile is done.
Does Medicare pay for a tub-to-shower conversion?
Plan on paying for it yourself. Medicare's guide to covered durable medical equipment does not list grab bars, shower seats or bathroom remodeling (Medicare.gov), and remodeling is generally treated as a home modification rather than medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited extra benefits; ask your plan for written confirmation before counting on it.
Do I need a permit to convert a tub to a shower?
Usually, because plumbing fixtures are being replaced and often relocated. Walnut Creek lists bathroom remodels among work requiring a permit (City of Walnut Creek). In Rossmoor, the First Walnut Creek Mutual lists tub-to-shower conversions as a standard alteration needing mutual approval.
